Teresa Scanlan is 17 years old
NewsCore - Teresa Scanlan of Nebraska was crowned Miss America in Las Vegas on Saturday night, beating 52 other beauty queens.
At 17, Scanlan is the youngest Miss America since the pageant began in 1921. She won a tiara and a $50,000 scholarship.
The teenager was one of the few contestants who did not sing or dance during the talent segment and instead played "White Water Chopsticks" on the piano.
Scanlan, who graduated from Scottsbluff High School, hopes to attend law school and has aspirations of becoming a judge and a politician.
Miss Arkansas Alyse Eady walked away with $25,000 as first runner-up and Miss Hawaii Jalee Fuselier won $20,000 for coming in third.
A twist was added to the competition this year and for the first time the contestants got to choose two finalists -- Miss Kentucky Djuan Trent and Miss Oregon Stephenie Denise Steers.
The beauty pageant was held at the Planet Hollywood casino resort. It celebrated its 90th anniversary this year.
